Raluca Stramaturaru obtained Romania’s best performance in the Winter Olympics.
The Winter Olympic Games are underway in the South Korean city of PyeongChang. On Tuesday, Raluca Stramaturaru obtained Romania’s best performance in the Winter Olympics in the last 24 years. Stramaturaru came in 7th in the women’s luge event.
Raluca Stramaturaru secured the 8th position after the first leg. Then she came in 12th after the second leg, 9th after the third and 6th after the last leg. On aggregate, Raluca clocked 3 minutes, 6 seconds and 288 thousandths. Winner of the event was Germany’s Natalie Geisenberger, followed by Dajana Eitberger, also from Germany.
The bronze medal went to Alex Gough of Canada. Fourth came in another athlete from Germany, followed in descending order by an athlete from Canada and one from the United States. All told, Romania came in fourth in the women’s individual luge event. We should also note that in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, Raluca Strămăturaru will also be competing in the teams’ relay event on February 15th.
Raluca Strămăturaru was born on November 22nd, 1985 in Sinaia. She participated in the Olympic Games in Vancouver in 2010, where she came in 21st. In the Olympic Games in Sochi in 2014, Raluca Stramaturaru came in 30th.
The last time when Romania clinched an all-time high performance in a winter edition of the Olympics was in 1994, in Lillehammer, Norway. Back then Ioan Apostol and Liviu Cepoi came in 6th in the men’s doubles luge event. In 1998 in Nagano, Japan, Romania’s Eva Tofalvi came in 11th in the biathlon event.
In Salt Lake City, in 2002, Eugen Radu and Marian Tican came in 15th in the men’s doubles luge event. In 2006 in Turin, Italy, the Romanian delegation’s best result was the 14th place won by Gheorghe Chiper in figure skating. Also 14th came in the Romanian women’s four by six kilometers biathlon relay team. In Vancouver in 2010, the Romanian delegation’s best result was again provided by the women’s four by six kilometers biathlon relay team.
In Sochi in 2014, Maria Adela Constantin and Andrea Grecu came in 17th in the women’s bobsleigh race. Also 17th came in Florin Cezar Craciun and Nicolae Istrate in the men’s doubles bobsleigh event.
