We bring you a review of the fotball match that pitted Steaua against Chelsea in Bucharest on Tuesday.
Playing on their own turf on Tuesday Romanian football side Steaua Bucharest, coached by Laurentiu Reghecampf, was thrashed four-nil in the second leg of the Champions League by British side Chelsea. The match was counting towards group E.
Unfortunately, Chelsea was better in every way. The Romanians could do nothing against a very coordinated British side, determined to make up for the defeat two weeks ago by the Swiss from Basel. Steaua managed to put up some coherent resistance in the first couple of minutes, but eventually they caved in to Chelsea’s relentless attacks.
Samuel Eto’o found himself close to the box and delivered a pass to Brazilian Ramirez who fired home on 19 minutes. It was one nil already and Macedonian Daniel Georgievski made it twice for Chelsea with an own goal occasioned by one of the guests’ sustained attacks right before the end of the first half. The score was two-nil and Ramirez piled on the agony with another goal for Chelsea in the 55th minute at the end of a spectacular action. Steaua struggled for chances and Cristian Tanase came very close to reducing the difference with a shot from a distance, barely deflected by keeper Petr Cech, who injured himself in the attempt. Frank Lampard sealed the points on ninety minutes with a long-distance shot.
In the other group E match Schalke secured a one-nil win against Basel taking the lead in the group’s standings with six points out of six matches.
In a three weeks time, Steaua will play Basel on their own turf, while Schalke will go up against Chelsea in Germany.
