News from domestic and international football
Romania's football champions CFR Cluj conceded a 4-0 defeat to Serbian side Red Star Football Club in an away match on Tuesday counting towards the Europa League play-offs. Milan Pavkov put the hosts in the lead in the 5th minute and Aleksandar Katai added a second one in the 38th minute. Ben El Fardou scored the third goal on 68 minutes and Mirko Ivanic sealed the points nine minutes later.
The match was a big step forward for the Serbian side while CFR's chances to qualify for the competition's next stage have considerably diminished. This has been the second heavy defeat for CFR since the past season, when they got trounced by AS Rome 5-nil. If eliminated by Red Star, CFR will be playing in the groups of Europa Conference League.
A surprising performance in the present edition of the play-offs has been obtained by the champions of the neighbouring Republic of Moldova, Sheriff Tiraspol. Sheriff, which secured a 3-0 win against Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday, stands good chances of becoming the first eleven from the Republic of Moldova to play in the Champions League.
Romania's football vice-champions, FCSB, formerly known as Steaua Bucharest, have a new headcoach - Edward Iordanescu, who is to replace Dinu Tudoran, after a bad season when FCSB failed to qualify for the European Cups and lost their first derby against Rapid Bucharest. Iordanescu has recently left CFR Cluj, a team, he coached into winning the last edition of the domestic championship. Among the teams he served as coach were CSK Sofia, Astra Giurgiu and Gaz Metan Medias. Edward is the son of Anghel Iordanescu, one of Romania's greatest headcoaches of all time. (DB)
