The Romanian gymnastics team failed to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio.
The Romanian gymnastics team failed to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro this summer after the disappointing results of both men's and women's squads in the Olympic qualifying events. It all started last year in October at the World Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow, when neither the women's nor the men's team qualified for the finals. Finishing the competition in the top eight would have secured Romania's place at the Olympic Games.
The Romanian male and female gymnasts had one more chance to qualify at the Olympic test events held last weekend. The men's qualifications consisted on 3 subdivisions. After the first two subdivisions, Romania was in third place, after Germany and France. In the third subdivision, however, Ukraine and the Netherlands scored better and surpassed Romania, pushing it back to the 5th place. Only the two best-ranked squads qualified for the Olympic Games.
Things were even worse in the women's competition, with Romania's squad finishing in the 7th place, with all but one team, South Korea, surpassing them. The Romanian female gymnasts had poor performances, especially in the uneven bars and floor events.
Romania will thus only be represented in Rio in the
individual events, by three gymnasts. Marian Dragulescu was the first to secure
his qualification after winning a silver medal in Glasgow. Romania is allowed
to send two more gymnasts to Rio, one male and one female, but their names are
yet to be established.
