Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, world no. 2, was knocked out from the Indian Wells tournament in the United States by Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Romanian-born Canadian player Bianca Andreescu has reached the semi-finals after defeating Garbine Muguruza of Spain, 6-0, 6-1. Also at Indian Wells, the pair made up of Horia Tecau of Romania and Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands was ousted by Novak Djokovic of Serbia and Fabio Fognini of Italy, 7-6, 2-6, 10-6 in the quarterfinals of the men’s doubles.
In other news from tennis, Romanian player Elena Gabriela Ruse has qualified to the round of 16 at the ITF tournament in Nishi-Tama, Japan, after defeating Great Britain’s Katy Dunne, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. At the ITF tournament in Kazan, Russia, Alexandra Dulgheru advanced to the round of 16 after easing past Valeria Savinykh of Russia, 6-2, 6-3, while another Romanian, Ioana Loredana Rosca has eliminated Elizaveta Koklina of Russia, 6-1, 6-1.
We move on to news from handball. SCM Ramnicu Valcea is still the odds-on favorite to win the domestic championship this season, although losing to CSM Bucharest at home 30-29, in a match rescheduled from the 18th round. This was the first defeat for SCM this season. The team holds good chances of winning the title, considering Valcea won 22-19 in the previous championship match against CSM Bucharest.
From the world of football, let us note the results of the last two matches played in Group 1 and Group 2 in the domestic championship. In Group 1, FCSB lost 1-2 to Viitorul Constanta, while FC Botosani drew nil-all against Concordia Chiajna in Group 2. CFR Cluj tops the league tables with 30 points, followed by CSU Craiova with 26 points and FCSB with 25 points. Dunarea Calarasi and Concordia Chiajna are bottom of the table.
