A look at some of the week's main sporting events
Women's volleyball side Alba Blaj have confirmed their dominance in the domestic volleyball competitions. Alba Blaj has also won Romania's Cup after previously winning the championship. In the Cup's finals in Alexandria, southern Romania, on Wednesday, Alba secured a 3-1 win against CSM Targoviste in a match that lasted one hour and 43 minutes. This is Alba's second trophy after the one in 2017 and their third consecutive participation in the finals of the aforementioned competition.
This week has seen the Group 1 matches of Romania's main football league. On Tuesday FC Botosani clinched a 2-0 away win against Dunarea Calarasi, while in Medias, local side Gaz Metan drew their game against Poli Iasi one-all. On Wednesday in Sibiu, central Romania, the game pitching local eleven FC Hermannstadt against Dinamo Bucharest ended in a goaless draw, while in Voluntari, local side Football Club secured a 2-1 win against Concordia Chiajna.
Gaz Metan comes first after the latest Group 1 matches with 39 points, followed by Dinamo Bucharest with 38, FC Botosani with 32 and Poli Iasi with 29. FC Voluntari is on the fifth position while sixth-placed Hermannstadt will be playing a tie game in a bid to avoid demotion to the second football league.
In group 2 matches on Saturday Universitatea Craiova takes on Viitorul Constanta in a home game to decide the team on the third position in the final ranking, which also translates as qualification for Europa League preliminaries. The group's other games have been scheduled for Sunday, when second-placed side FCSB takes on champions CFR Cluj in Bucharest. The leg will end with a game pitching Astra against Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe in Giurgiu, southern Romania.
