Sorana Cîrstea and Simona Halep have got through to the third round of the Australian Open, which is the year's first Grand Slam tournament. Carstea outclassed the tournament's new top-seeded player, the Czech Republic's Petra Kvitova, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. Second-seeded competitor, Simona Halep, secured a win against Australian challenger Ajla Tomljanovic, also in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. Simona's win was a hard-fought one as she came from behind overturning Tomljanovic's 5-2 advantage during the match.
In news from women's handball, on Wednesday Minaur Baia Mare made a huge leap towards the quarterfinals of the European League. Minaur thrashed Norwegian opponents Storhamar at home, 40-27. Minaur Baia Mare are at the top of the table in Group C, with 6 points in 4 games played. Minaur's last group tie will see the Romanian team taking on German opponents Thuringer on February 20 and 21st, on home court. The first two teams in the group will go through to the quarterfinals.
Romania's capital city Bucharest this month is back on the European map of football competitions. The first leg of the Champions League's round of 16, pitting Atletico Madrid against Chelsea FC on Tuesday, February 23, will be hosted by the National Arena in Bucharest starting 22:00. UEFA's decision has been taken in the wake of the restrictions imposed to the English delegation, related to travelling on Spanish territory. The match will be played behind closed doors.
In domestic football, matches counting towards Romanian Cup's round of 16 are underway this week. On Tuesday, second-league team Petrolul Ploiesti secured a 3-nil win against Poli Iasi. Chindia Târgoviște grabbed a 3-nil win against second-league team Farul Constanta on Wednesday. Another second-league team, Universitatea Cluj, defeated UTA Arad on home turf, 3-nil, while Dinamo Bucharest won the home game they played against FCSB, 1-nil. On Thursday, second-league squad Pandurii Târgu Jiu are pitted against Gaz Metan Medias, Poli Timisoara play Astra Giurgiu, while FC Botosani play Universitatea Craiova. Another second-league team, Dunarea Calarasi, has got through to the Cup's quarterfinals since Turris Oltul Turnu Magurele has pulled out from competition.
