Romanians at the Olympic Games in Tokyo
Two-time world champion and European vice-champion, Romanian freestyle wrestler Alina Vuc this coming Friday takes on Bulgarian challenger Miglena Georgyeva Selishka, in a confrontation counting towards the round of 16 as part of the women's freestyle Olympic tournament in Tokyo. In the competition's 50-kilogram category, the fight will be tough for the Romanian. Alina Vuc is one of the favorites to winning a medal, but 25-year-old Georgyeva Selishka is a European champion in 2020 and a bronze medalist at the European Games in 2019. Vuc has been designated the number 2 seed in Tokyo, and if she outclasses Selishka, in the quarterfinals the Romanian takes on the winner of the confrontation pitting Turkey's Evin Demirhan against Sarah Ann Hildebrandt of the USA.
Another Romanian freestyle wrestler, Albert Saritov, in the 97-kilogram category, also competes on Friday. In the round of 16, Saritov fights Cuban-born Italian challenger Abraham de Jesus Conyedo Ruano. Russian wrestler Saritov, whose origins are Chechen, won the bronze medal for Romania at the Olympic Games in Rio, in 2016. Albert Ramazanovici Saritov was the first naturalized athlete to have won an Olympic medal for Romania. If he advances to the quarterfinals, Saritov takes on the winner of the fight pitting US wrestler Fredrick Kyle Snyder against Canada's Jordan Steen.
Also in the latest developments as part of the Tokyo Olympics, on Saturday, Romania's javelin thrower Alexandru Mihaita Novac will prove his mettle in the final of the event. This past Wednesday Novac secured his qualification thanks to a successful, first-attempt 83-meter and 27-centimeter throw, a personal record for the Romanian. Novac is thus 4th placed in group A, and 7th placed overall.
