Romanian tennis player Simona Halep has been eliminated in the second round of the WTA tournament in Montreal, a competition with total prizes of 1,835,490 dollars. Halep has been defeated by US challenger Danielle Collins 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in a match that lasted almost three hours.
Halep who was champion in Montreal in 2016 and 2018, thus had her first match after the injuries she suffered during the tournament in Rome three months ago, which prevented her from defending the title in Wimbledon and playing in the Tokyo Olympics. Simona has this week left for the first time the group of the world's top ten players and is currently 13th in the WTA ranking.
Horia Tecău and Kevin Krawietz on Wednesday qualified for the quarters of the doubles contest of the tennis tournament in Toronto. The Romanian-German pair obtained a 6-2, 1-6, 12-10 victory against Austrians Oliver Marach and Philipp Oswald. Fourth-seeded Tecau and Krawietz obtained a dramatic win in one hour and 21 minutes at their fifth game-ball and 9-6, 10-9 in super tiebreak.
Headcoach Florin Bratu has taken over the country's Under-21 football side. The former striker has signed up for two years and has as his main objective the qualification for the Olympic Games in 2024.
As a player, Bratu won 14 caps for Romania's national eleven for which he scored twice. He played for famous football clubs in Romania and abroad such as Rapid Bucharest, Galatasaray, Nantes, Dinamo Bucharest, Valenciennes or Litex Loveci. Bratu coached Dinamo Bucharest, Aerostar Bacau, Turris Oltul Turnu Magurele and Concordia Chiajna.
Romania's U21 football side is to kick off a training campaign for Euro 2023 in September with two friendlies, against England, on September 3rd and against Georgia four days later. Both games are to be hosted by the Triumphal Arch Stadium in Bucharest. Romania and Georgia are already qualified for the competition as host countries.
On November 13th, Romania's national rugby side will be playing the Netherlands in their last game of Rugby Europe Championship, the European Rugby Federation has announced.
The Netherlands has for the first time joined Rugby Europe Championship after a 23-21 play-off win against Belgium. Romania comes 18th in a world ranking while the Netherlands occupies the 24th position.
