Both Romanian teams won their respective matches on Wednesday in the European Table Tennis Championships hosted by Cluj-Napoca. The women's team won 3-0 against Belgium, thanks to Bernadette Szőcs, Elizabeta Samara and Daniela Dodean Monteiro. Szőcs defeated Nathalie Marchetti 3-1, Samara outplayed Margo Degraef, again 3-1, while Dodean Monteiro won 3-0 against Sara Devos.
In the men's competition, Romania defeated Luxembourg, 3-1. Rareş Şipoş defeated Eric Gold 3-2, Hunor Szőcs outperformed another Romanian-born player, Traian Ciociu, 3-0, and Ovidiu Ionescu won against Eric Gold, 3-0. The guest team's only point was scored by Luka Mladenovic - 3-2 against Ovidiu Ionescu.
Then, Romania defeated Finland, 3-1 overall. Rareş Şipoş won against Benedek Olah, 3-2, and Ovidiu Ionescu defeated Sam Khosravi 3-0 and Benedek Olah, 3-2. Hunor Szőcs lost to Alex Naumi, 1-3. On Thursday, in the women's matches, Romania takes on Italy, and the men's team are facing Slovenia.
The Romanian tennis player Gabriela Ruse qualified on Wednesday in the round of 16 of the WTA tournament in Chicago, with 565,350 US dollars in prize money. In the second round of the competition, she beat Ukraine's Katerina Kozlova in 2 sets, 7-5, 6-2. In the doubles, Romanian Raluca Olaru and Ukrainian Nadia Kicenok qualified in the second round. Olaru and Kicenok outplayed, in the first round, the American Kaitlyn Christian and Erin Routliffe of New Zealand, 6-4, 7-5.
