The Romanian men's volley team Arcada Galaţi was ousted from Champions League. The Romanian team lost away from home in the second leg of the first preliminary round to CEZ Karlovarsko of the Czech Republic, score 3-2, and 15-10 in the "golden set". Arcada had won in the first leg 3-2. The team from Galaţi however will not leave European inter-club competitions, and is expected to play in the CEV Cup preliminaries, where it will take on another team from the Czech Republic, VK Lvi Prague In other news from volley, in the first leg of the first round of the Romanian Cup, the defending champions Dinamo won 3-0 against Bucharest rivals Rapid. The match was played away from home. The return leg will be played on October 20. The match pitting Dinamo against Rapid is considered a traditional highlight of men's volley. Over 1966-1967, the two teams competed in the European Champions Cup final, Dinamo winning both times.
In men's basketball, CSM CSU Oradea had a poor start in Group H in FIBA Europe Cup. The Romanian vice-champions lost on home turf to Legia Warsaw of Poland, 76-66. In the other group fixture, Szolnoki Olajbányász won against FC Porto, 81-64. In the second round, on October 20, Legia will take on Szolnoki whereas FC Porto will play CSM CSU Oradea.
The Romanian Rugby Federation on Wednesday decided that the SuperLeague finals, set to be played this weekend on the Triumphal Arch Stadium in Bucharest, will be played with no crowd attendance, due to the high COVID infection rate reported in Bucharest and in the surrounding area. The decision is aimed at reducing the risk of infection among spectators, organizers and athletes themselves, the Romanian Rugby Federation writes in a press release.
From Friday through Sunday, the city of Cluj-Napoca will play host to a major rhythmic gymnastics competition - World Challenge Cup. The event will bring together the elite of this sport. The qualifying phase is slated for Friday and Saturday, when athletes will be trying to secure a good score allowing them to compete in Sunday's final. (VP)
