The Romanian tennis player Sorana Cîrstea has been knocked out in the round of 16 at the Australian Open in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, by seventh-seed Garbine Muguruza of Spain. Cîrstea will be rewarded with a check worth 220,000 Australian Dollars and 240 WTA points.
Also in the round of 16, two other Romanian players, Horia Tecău and Florin Mergea, have been eliminated from the competition in the men's doubles. Horia Tecău and his doubles partner, the Dutch player Jean-Julien Rojer, were defeated 7-6, 7-6 by the all-Australian pair Marc Polmans and Andrew Whittington, while Florin Mergea and his doubles partner, the British player Dominic Inglot, were defeated by the all-French pair seeded first made up of Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert, in three sets, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2. For their participation in the men's doubles at the Australian Open, the two pairs that have been knocked out of the competition were rewarded with a check worth 40,000 Australian dollars and 180 ATP points.
Edinburgh rugby team thrashed Romanian champions Timisoara Saracens, 49-3, in the final group match of the Challenge Cup, Europe's second-tier competition for professional clubs. Edinburgh won Group 4 with 24 points, while Timisoara Saracens came bottom of the table, with zero points.
Now it's news from football. Romanian striker Florin Andone scored the equaliser in a match between his team Deportivo La Coruna and Las Palmas.
