TENNIS - Romanian tennis player Irina Begu reached the semi-finals of the WTA tournament in Istanbul, totalling 226,750 dollars in prize money. On Saturday, the Romanian lost to Pauline Parmentier of France, 6-3, 6-4. The French player went on to win the tournament.
VOLLEY - CSM Bucharest has won the Romanian Cup in volley. In the final match played on Saturday in Bacau, CSM won 3-1 against Alba Blaj. This season CSM Bucharest, currently coached by Ferhat Akbas of Turkey, also won the Romanian championship.
HOCKEY - In the Lithuanian city of Kaunas, the Romanian ice hockey team won 7-3 against Croatia on Saturday. This win guarantees Romania stays in Group B of the First Division in the World Championship. Romania needed a win to avoid relegation to the fourth tier of world ice hockey standings, after losing to Ukraine, Lithuania, Estonia and Japan.
TABLE TENNIS - Halmstadt, Sweden is playing host to the World Table Tennis Championships. In a match counting for Group C, on Sunday the Romanian women’s team defeated the Czech Republic 3-1. Also on Sunday, Romania lost 1-3 to the Netherlands. In the men’s competition, in Group A, Sweden defeated Romania 3-nil.
FOOTBALL - FCSB continues to top the first league standings after drawing 1-all against runner-up CFR Cluj. With three fixtures left until the end of the group phase, FCSB has a 2-point lead over CFR. In the other fixture games, on Friday, in Group 2, Juventus Bucharest grabbed a 1-nil win over FC Voluntari. On Saturday, in Timisoara, Poli defeated Concordia Chiajna 1-nil.
