The European Fighting Championships held last week in Russia brought Romania five medals. In the Greco-Roman event, wrestler Mihai Mihut won the gold medal in the 63-kg category, while Alin Alexuc Ciurariu got the bronze medal in the 130-kg category. Freestyle wrestler Alina Vuc came out second, in the 50-kg category. Both Alexandra Nicoleta Anghel in the 72-kg category and Ivan Guidea in the 61-kg category got the bronze medal.
We move on to news from women’s handball. The winners of the EHF Cup Final will be decided on Friday in Craiova. SCM Craiova played against Vipers Kristiansand of Norway away from home and lost 22-26. Cristiana Florianu was the best player of the Romanian team, having scored 9 goals. The return leg is scheduled for Friday, May 11, in Craiova. This is the first time both teams have reached this phase of the competition.
Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, no. 1 in the world, qualified on Sunday to the secod round of the WTA tournament in Madrid, after defeating Russian Ekaterina Makarova, 6-1, 6-0. Halep will next play against Elise Mertens. Another Romanian player, Sorana Carstea made it to the second round after defeating Katerina Siniakova of the Czech republic, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. In the second round Carstea will be up against Russian Darya Kasatkina.
This past weekend saw a new round of the group phase of the Romanian First league. On Friday, FC Voluntari defeated Poli Timisoara 3-2, while the match between Viitorul Constanta and Astra Giurgiu ended in a draw (1-1). In Group 2, on Saturday, FC Botosani beat Juventus Bucharest 3-0. On Sunday, Dinamo Bucharest defeated Gaz Metan Medias 3-2. On Monday, Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe will play visiting side Concordia Chiajna. In Group 1 on Saturday, CFR Cluj beat Unviersitatea Craiova 1-0, while Poli Iasi will play FCSB on Monday.
