The Romanian city of Galati last week saw a new edition of the Golden Belt Boxing Tournament with its final matches taking place on Saturday. Nine Romanian pugilists were vying for gold and three of them eventually stepped onto the first step of the podium. In the women’s 64 kilogram category, Claudia Nechita outperformed Steluta Duta. In the men’s 51 kilogram category, Robert Jitaru outperformed another Romanian, Vasile Suciu while in the + 91 kilogram category Mihai Nistor clinched a win against Frazer Clarke of England.
In the first round of the tennis tournament in Beijing, Romanian tennis player Sorana Carstea has been defeated by Kiki Bartens of the Netherlands, 6-2, 6-0. Also in Beijing, the world’s number one, Romanian Simona Halep lost to Ons Jabeurr of Tunisia. The African challenger won the first set 6-1 but back injuries prompted Halep to give up 32 minutes into the game.
Last weekend saw the games counting towards the 10th leg of Romania’s first football league. On Friday in Bucharest, local side Dinamo ended nil-all their game against Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe. That was Dinamo’s first game under the guidance of their new head coach Claudiu Niculescu. Also in a draw, this time one-all, ended the game pitching FC Voluntari against FC Botosani on Saturday.
Sunday saw three games; Gaz Metan Medias secured a one-nil win against Poli Iasi. Then in Ovidiu, southern Romania, Astra conceded their first defeat this season, nil-one, to Viitorul Constanta. In Targu Mures, western Romania, FC Hermannstadt lost 3 – 1 to FCSB.Monday will see the leg’s last games, Concordia Chiajna versus Dunarea Calarasi and CFR Cluj versus Universitatea Craiova.
FCSB tops the standings with 21 points and is followed by Astra with 17.
