Romania’s rugby team was won the IRB Nations Cup after brushing aside all the other three teams enrolled in the competition held in Bucharest. On “Triumphal Arch” Stadium in Bucharest Romania outscore Italy’s B second representatives, final score 26-13, putting on a good display of rugby. The Romanian side dominated the match all throughout, scoring two spectacular tries through player of the game fullback Catalin Fercu. In the other fixture of the day, Argentina Jaguars pulled a 30-17 win over Russia. Romania finished the tournament in first place with 12 points, followed by Emerging Italy with 8 points, Argentina Jaguars with 4 points and Russia with 0 points.
We move on to rowing, as Romanian rower Florin Cmanici scooped bronze in the single scull 5000-m race at the European Rowing Championships held in Portugal. Romania has a total of six medals on its record sheet: silver in the quad scull 1000-m race, silver in the double-canoe 500-m race, bronze in the double-canoe 1000-m race, bronze in the double-scull 1000-m race and bronze in the single scull 5000-m race.
From the world of women’s volley, Hungary has edged out Romania 3-1 in a match held in Bursa, Turkey, counting towards the European Volley League. Romania had previously lost 2-3 to host country Turkey, although it secured a narrow 3-2 win against Bulgaria. Turkey ranked first, followed by Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania.
The European Beach Soccer is underway in Terracina, Italy. This weekend the Netherlands hammered Romania 5-2. Romania is bottom of the table with no points, with the Netherlands, Ukraine, Italy having three points each.
The 2014 European Championships qualifiers in men’s handball saw a next round this weekend. In Rejkjavik, Iceland outperformed Romania 37-27 in the last match of Group 6. The Romanian side had a better first half, securing a 3-goal lead. Iceland came back strong in the second half and won by a 10-goal difference. Romania lost all matches in the competition and completed the qualifying campaign in 4th place. Iceland won the qualifying group, followed by Belarus and Slovenia.
And we end with news from the ROBOWL National American Football League, where Cluj Crusaders won Timisoara 89ers in the final, score 14-8, thus becoming the new domestic champion. In the bronze final Bucharest Rebels trouncd Bucharest Warriors 40-12.
