Football The sports highlight of the weekend is undoubtedly the football game between the national sides of Romania and Greece, which is due to start at 9.45 pm on the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium in Piraeus. This is Romania’s first game in its Euro 2016 qualifying tournament and an opportunity to avenge its defeat at the hands of Greece in the World Cup playoffs. Greece qualified for the World Cup tournament in Brazil after defeating Romania at home 3-nil last November and drawing in Bucharest 1-all. This time around, Romania’s Euro 2016 qualifying group also includes Hungary, Northern Ireland, Finland and the Faeroe Islands.
Shooting 12 Romanian shooters will be taking part in the World Shooting Championships hosted by the Spanish city of Granada between the 6th and the 21st of September. The Romanian team includes Olympic champion Alin Moldoveanu, who will be competing in Granada in the 10 m air rifle event. According to Agerpress news agency, the goal of the Romanian Sport Shooting Federation is a top ten ranking.
Tennis. In New York, the US Open tennis tournament is drawing to a close. All of Romania’s singles players were eliminated from the competition as early as last week. In the doubles, Horia Tecau and his pair, Jean Julien Rojer of the Netherlands went as far as the quarterfinals.
In Romania, two tennis tournaments will come to an end on Sunday: a men’s challenger tour worth 35,000 euros in prize money held in Brasov, in the centre, and a women’s ITF tournament worth 10,000 dollars hosted by the eastern city of Galati.
