The latest from Romanian football teams’ participations in European competitions and news from Romania’s domestic championship, League One.
Steaua Bucharest and Astra Giurgiu, the two Romanian sides taking part in the Europa League, were defeated in last night’s fixtures. In the competition’s Group J, Steaua lost to Ukrainian side Dynamo Kiev, 3-1, away from home. The host team, we’ve got to admit, did better under all aspects. Dynamo’s Andrey Yarmolenko drew first blood on 40 minutes.
In the second half of the game Dinamo wet two goals up, as Artem Kravet scored Dinamo Kiev’s second goal in minute 66. Late into the game Steaua were only a whisk away from securing their comeback, since on 89 minutes Raul Rusescu scored the Romanian side’s only goal. The Romanian team’s fate, however, was sealed by Lukasz Teodorczyk, who scored Dynamo’s third goal in the last seconds of the game, taking advantage of the fact that the referee did not penalize a handball from Sergey Rybalka.
In Group J’s other game, Danish side Aalborg snatched a precious 1-nil home win against their Portuguese opponents Rio Ave. Dinamo top the table in Group J, with 6 points on their record sheet. Steaua and Aalborg, each with three points, are in the runner-up position, while Rio Ave come at the bottom of the table, with no points.
In Group D, Astra Giurgiu on home turf sustained a 2-1 defeat in the game against Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg from Austria. Despite the fact that Astra’s Takayuki Seito put his team ahead early into the game, on 15 minutes, Red Bull had a quick comeback, since Kevin Kampl and Jonatan Sonano scored for their team, on 36 and 42 minutes, respectively. In the Group D’s other game, Celtic Glasgow defeated Dinamo Zagreb, 1-nil. Salzburg and Celtic have the lead in their group, with 4 points each. Following in descending order are Dinamo Zagreb, with 3 points, and Astra Giurgiu with zero point on their record sheet.
