This week’s most important sporting event is the European Women’s Handball Championship in Hungary and Croatia. Norway and Sweden will be playing in the semifinals in Budapest on Friday, while Montenegro will be up against Spain. Once again Romania’s representative didn’t live up to expectations as they failed to meet the goal they set for themselves before leaving the country. The ninth position occupied by coach Tadici’s trainees is way below the potential of the Romanian side, if we take into account their participation so far in the competition.
Apparently, the Romanians were unable to put up with the psychological stress right upon the wins against Spain and Ukraine. They managed good shows in the games against Denmark and Hungary but lost their cutting edge right before the end of the game. Inside Cristina Neagu and tender Paula Ungureanu have again confirmed their value in this competition.
Let’s move on to football now. Romania ranks 15th in the world 2014 standings recently published by the International Football Federation, being one of the best positions Romania has obtained so far. It was mainly due to the excellent performances our footballers have clinched in the Euro 2016 qualifiers this autumn. We recall that Romania has taken the lead in qualifying group F of the European championships, following wins against Greece, Finland and Northern Ireland. They also scored a draw against Hungary. Greek side Skoda Xanthi coached by Romanian Razvan Lucescu has managed an excellent resulti n the 15th leg of Greece’s championships. On their own turf Xanthi has defeated 4-2 Panathinaikos Athens, one of the goals being scored by former Steaua’s player Pantelis Kapetanos.
Romanian fencer Tiberius Dolniceanu, silver medallist in the World Championships held in Kazan, Russia, has been designated the best Romanian fencer of the year. In the world standings Simona Gherman, European champion in Romania’s epee team and bronze medallist in the individual event, follows Dolniceanu. The third position is occupied by Ana Maria Branza, also from the same team.
