A look ahead at some of the sports highlights of the weekend.
The Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, will come to an end on Sunday. Unfortunately, all Romanian players have already been eliminated from the competition.
In the women’s singles, world no. 3 Simona Halep had the longest run but did not make it past the quarterfinals, where she lost to Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0.
In the men’s doubles, the Romanian-Dutch pair Horia Tecau and Jean Julien Rojer played in the semifinals, but were defeated by the all-Italian pair Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini in three sets. This is for the second time that Horia Tecau made it to the semifinals of the Australian Open. In 2012, he played the semifinals here with a different partner, Sweden’s Robert Lindstedt. However, this is the best Grand Slam result for the Tecau-Rojer pair, after losing in the second round last year and failing to make it past the quarterfinals in the other three Grand Slam tournaments.
In football, the local team Concordia Chiajna are training in Cyprus until February 10th. After a first friendly on Friday against Ural Ekaterinburg, a top-tier team from Russia, Concordia will face the Serbian first league side FK Cukaricki on Sunday. More games are scheduled for next week against the first league team Aris Limasol from Cyprus, the Japanese side FC Korea and the Armenian side Ararat Erevan.
The Romanian team CSMS Iasi are training in Turkey. Three days later, CSMS Iasi face the Bosniac side Zvijevda Gradacac, currently at no. 13 in the Bosniac championship. Their final game is on the 12th of February against Chernomorets Odessa, who are now ranked 9th in the Ukrainian first league.
