A look ahead at the main sporting events scheduled this weekend.
The Romanian men’s basketball team CSU Oradea on Thursday qualified to the Champions League group phase after knocking out Lukoil Akademik Sofia of Bulgaria 70-58 on home turf in the return leg of the second preliminary round. The Romanian champions qualified on aggregate after losing 75-72 to the Bulgarian side away from home in the first leg. CSU Oradea has been drawn into the Champions League Group B alongside Umana Reyer Venezia of Italy, Avtodor Saratov of Russia, Kataja Basket of Finland, Maccabi Rand Media of Israel, Khimik Yuzhne of Ukraine, Pinar Karsiyaka of Turkey and MSB Le Mans of France.
This weekend will see matches counting towards European inter-club handball competitions. In the EHF Cup, in first leg of the second preliminary round, SCM Politehnica Timisoara is playing Norway in Arendal on Saturday. On the same day, CSM Bucharest is facing HC Zamet of Croatia on home turf. On Sunday, Dinamo Bucharest is playing its third match in the Champions League group phase. Eliodor Voica’s trainees will play Besiktas Istanbul of Turkey. In the first two group fixtures, Dinamo drew 32-all away from home against Holstebro and defeated 35-31 Motor Zaporoje of Ukraine on home turf.
Russia Vladislav Bezborodov, aged 43, has been designated as the main referee in the match between Romania and Armenia to be played on October 8 in Erevan as part of the preliminaries for the 2018 World Cup. A FIFA referee since 2009, Bezborodov has so far 50 international caps. He will be seconded by sideline referees Valeri Dancenko and Maksim Gavrilin, also of Russia. Substitute coach will be Sergey Ivanov. Bezbodorov was the main referee for the match Romania’s under-19 team lost nil-3 to Scotland in the 2009 European Cup preliminaries. Bzebodorov was also the main referee in Steaua Bucharest’s 6-0 win against Aalborg of Denmark on September 18, 2014 in the Europa League group phase.
