The European Rowing Championships get underway at the weekend, in the Czech Republic’s Račice lake. Taking the start line for a top-flight competition will also be Romania’s men’s coxed eight crew. As many as 39 athletes competing in 10 events will represent Romania; five are men’s events, while the other five are women’s version of the competition. According to the Romanian Rowing Federation, this is the most numerous Romanian delegation ever to have taken part in a European competition in the last three Olympic cycles. The Romanian delegation’s avowed aim is to walk home with at least two medals. In Germany last year, Romanian rowers won only one medal, a bronze won by the two-woman coxless oars crew, made up of Mădălina Bereş and Laura Oprea.
It’s news from football now, as on Thursday, the last game was played, counting towards the 12th round of League One’s Group Two. Away from home, Poli Iasi grabbed a 1-nil win against F C Botosani. Games counting towards the last-but-one round, the 13th, are scheduled at the weekend. On Friday, Pandurii Targu Jiu take on Gaz Metan Medias. On Sunday, Poli Timisoara receive the visit ASA Targu Mures, while on Monday in Chiajna, in the south, the local side Concordia face FC Botosani. The 13th round’s closing fixture is scheduled this coming Wednesday as on home turf, Poli Iasi take on FC Voluntari.
ASA Targu Mures have already been relegated to the second league, while Poli Timisoara and Concordia Chiajna fight to avoid the last-but-one position in the table, which also means relegation for the unfortunate team.
The final confrontation of Romanian Cup in Football will be played on Saturday, as FC Voluntari are pitted against Astra Giurgiu. As an absolute first, the team from Voluntari are a whisk away from winning a noteworthy trophy. We recall Astra had won the Cup in 2014, when in the final they outclassed Steaua 4-2, after extra time and the penalty shootouts.
