Romanian tennis player Simona Halep has made it to the 3rd round in the year’s second Grand Slam tournament, the Roland Garros. Halep grabbed a straight-sets win against the German Tatjana Maria, 6-4, 6-3. Another Romanian, Sorana Carstea, sustained a 7-5, 6-4 defeat by the Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro. In the women’s doubles, the Romanian-Chinese pair made up of Irina Camelia Begu and the Chinese Saisai Zheng has got through to the second round, as they grabbed a 6-3, 7-6 win against the Swiss-Serbian pair made up of Xenia Knoll and Nina Stojanovic. In the men’s doubles, the Romanian-Dutch pair made up of Horia Tecau and Jean Julien Rojer defeated the all-French pair made up of Constant Lestienne and Corentin Moutet, 6-1, 6-1.
We continue with news from table tennis, as the European table tennis championships held in Germany’s Dusseldorf saw the Romanian Elizabeta Samara defeating Japanese contender Hitomi Sato, 4-3, in the third round. Another Romanian, Daniela Monteiro-Dodean, outclassed Austrian challenger Jia Liu, 4-1. In the men’s version of the same competition, Ovidiu Ionescu trounced the French Emmanuel Lebesson, 4-nil, while Hunor Szocs defeated Croatia’s Andrej Gacina by the narrowest of margins, 4-3.
The 3rd round of the Dunlop National Rally Championship is hosted by the western Romanian town of Arad at the weekend. Adrian Raspopa and Cosmin Diacu are by far the leaders of the race for the two-wheel drive automobiles and this year, they are set to kick-start with the maximum number of points. The Arad Rally this year is also the second leg of the Balkan Rally Trophy, which is part of the FIA European Rallies Trophy.
We continue with news from domestic football as the 14th round, the last one, has four fixtures on schedule. On Sunday, with the same starting hour, 9 pm, FC Botosani take on Pandurii Targu Jiu, Gaz Metan Medias face Poli Timisoara, while FC Voluntari are pitted against Concordia Chiajna. League One’s last fixture is scheduled on Monday, as ASA Targu Mures take on CSMS Iasi. 8th-placed ASA Targu Mures is the first team to have relegated to division two, while the second such team will be picked from among 5th-placed Pandurii Targu Jiu, 6th-placed Concordia Chiajna and 7th-placed Poli Timisoara.
