Here are some of the weekend’s main sporting events
The world’s number one tennis player, Romanian Simona Halep, will be taking on Naomi Osaka of Japan in the semifinals of the Indian Wells tournament. The two players have so far met four times and Halep has won all the matches. Their latest game was in the Australian Open’s round of 16 when Halep secured a two-set win, 6-3, 6-2.
The Romanian won the Indian Wells trophy back in 2015 when she outperformed Jelena Jankovic in the finals. Also in the competition’s semifinals Daria Kasatkina will be up against Venus Williams of the USA.
On Sunday, Romania’s national rugby team play their last round in the European Championship, taking on Georgia in Tbilisi. The current edition of the European Championship counts towards the qualification for the World Championship, to be held in Japan in 2019.
Due to the poor results they obtained, Romania stands only slim chances to end up on the second position. In order to qualify, Romania must defeat the group’s leader Georgia and get the bonus point. The poor results of our rugby side have prompted the resignation of the technical staff led by the Welsh Lynn Howells.
Over March 16th and 29th the Georgian city of Batumi will be hosting the European Individual Chess Championship. The event is to bring together 311 participants from 34 countries, Romania being represented by the grand masters Mircea Parligras, Constantin Lupulescu, Bogdan-Daniel Deac, Vladislav Nevednichy, the international master Lucian Miron and grand master Mihaela Sandu.
This weekend will see the matches being played, counting towards the second round of the Romanian football championships’ group one. On Friday, Viitorul Constanta plays Universitatea Craiova while CSMS Iasi takes on Astra Giurgiu. The third match on Friday will be pitching CFR Cluj against FCSB. CFR tops the table with 33 points, followed by FCSB with 31and Universitatea Craiova with 29.
In group two also on Friday Juventus Bucharest plays Poli Timisoara. Two more games are scheduled on Saturday, Gaz Metan Medias versus Concordia Chiajna and FC Botosani versus FC Dinamo Bucharest. The last game is due on Sunday when Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe takes on FC Voluntari.
