Simona Halep of Romania again stands a chance to win the Roland Garros
The world’s number one tennis player, Simona Halep of Romania, again stands a chance to win a Grand Slam tournament, after qualifying for the finals of the Roland Garros tournament with a two-set win, 6-1, 6-4, against Spanish challenger Garbine Muguruza. The Romanian will be facing the American Sloane Stephens, the world’s 10th player, in the finals. Stephens comes after a 6-4, 6-4 win against her compatriot Madison Keys.
This is Simona’s third participation in the French Open. We recall that she lost the final twice, against Russian Maria Sharapova in 2014 and against Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia in 2017.
Halep has a 5-2 head-to-head lead against Stephens. She secured a two-set win 6-4, 6-3 against Stephens in Roland Garros’ round of 16 in 2014. Irrespective of the result in Saturday’s finals, the Romanian will be keeping her number one position in the world’s ranking.
In other news, Sofia, the capital of neighboring Bulgaria, will be hosting the European Women’s Boxing championships. Romania already has three representatives in the quarterfinals. Steluta Duta will be fighting in the 48-kilogram category, Lacramioara Perjoc in the 57-kilogram contest, and Dana Borzei in the contest of the 64-kilogram category. The matches in Sofia will also count towards qualification for the European Games due in Minsk in 2019. The first ten athletes in the categories of 51, 57, 60, 69 and 75 kilograms can book their tickets for the competition in Belarus.
In domestic football, Saturday will see the first play-off game pitching two football sides that will be vying for a place or trying to improve their results in Romania’s first football division. The last but one side, FC Voluntari, currently holding the sixth position in Group 2, will be playing at home against second-leaguer Chindia Targoviste. The return match is due in Targoviste on Wednesday.
