The Romanian men’s saber team failed to win the bronze medals at the European Fencing Championships in Novi Sad, Serbia. On Thursday the Romanian fencers lost 45-43 to Germany in the bronze final. Made up of Tiberiu Dolniceanu, Alin Badea and Iulian Teodosiu, the Romanian team had a good run, ousting Serbia in the round of 16 then eliminating Russia in the quarterfinals. Unfortunately Romania lost to Hungary in the semi-finals. Romania thus ranked 4th at the end of the tournament.
In news from basketball, the Romanian women’s team lost 76-71 to Turkey on Thursday in the last match of the friendly tournament hosted by Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic. Previously the Romanian team had lost the first two matches, 63-76 to the Czech Republic and 72-91 to China.
We move on to news from football. Romanian vice-champions FCSB defeated CS Cornu of the fourth division 4-1 in the friendly game played on Forex Stadium in Brasov. Scoring for FCSB were Florinel Coman twice, Ovidiu Popescu and Florin Tanase from penalty kick.
The Romanian Cup winners Universitatea Craiova will play its first friendly this summer season on June 24 against V-Varen Nagasaki of Japan. The match is part of a training camp the team from Craiova has scheduled in Austria. The team from Nagasaki finished the first football league in Japan in 15th place.
