The latest in sports and a preview of the weekend action.
Let's begin with football. Romanian champions CFR Cluj on Thursday evening played against the Czech side FK Jablonec away in the Conference League Group D. Jablonec's Vaclav Pilar scored 51 minutes into the match after a handball in the box from Camorra, who also got a red card for this. In the other group fixture, Randers FC and AZ Alkmaar drew 2-all.
Let's move to men's handball. Romanian champions Dinamo Bucharest defeated the Polish side Lomza Vive Kielce 32-29 in the first leg of Champions League Group B. In other group matches, Motor Zaporoje defeated FC Porto 30-27, Telekom Veszprem HC defeated Paris Saint-Germain Handball 34-31 and SG Flensburg lost to Barcelona 21-25.
This weekend, Bucharest is playing host to the FIBA 3x3 World Tour Finals. This is a basketball competition in which each side has three players and which brings together 24 national sides from 13 different countries. Romania will be represented in all three world competitions, men's and women's youth sides and the women's senior side.
In women's handball, the Romanian champions CSM Bucharest will face the Russian champions Rostov Don on Saturday at home in the second leg of Champions League Group A. CSM are currently in 6th place in their group, from 8 teams. Also on Saturday, Minaur Baia Mare will be playing their second leg match in the EHF Cup Round 1 away against the Bulgarian side Lokomotiv Gorna Oryahovitsa. Minaur won the first leg, 44-22.
Finally in sports, a preview of the 9th leg of the Romanian First League in football. Friday sees FC Voluntari vs CS Mioveni and Rapid București vs Gaz Metan Mediaș. On Saturday, Chindia Târgoviște are playing Farul Constanța and FCU Craiova 1948 are playing FCSB. On Sunday, Academica Clinceni are playing FC Argeș, Sepsi OSK Sf. Gheorghe are playing UTA Arad and Dinamo Bucharest and playing FC Botoșani. On Monday, CFR Cluj are playing CS Universitatea Craiova. CFR Cluj are currently in the lead with 21 points, followed by Rapid Bucharest and FC Botoșani, each with 17 points. (CM)
