Swimmer Norbert Trandafir
Romanian swimmer Norbert Trandafir on Saturday made it to the 50m freestyle final at the European Aquatics Championships in London. He clocked 22.12s, which was the fourth fastest time in the second semifinal. Trandafir thus obtained the qualifying time standard for the Olympic Games, according to the website of the Romanian Swimming and Modern Pentathlon Federation. He finished 8th in the final, clocking 22.51s.
Norbert Trandafir is the second Romanian swimmer to qualify for the Rio Olympic Games this summer. Robert Glina also booked his seat for Rio, where he will compete in the 100m backstroke event. In the heats, Trandafir clocked 22.58s, ranking 6th in heat 8. Here are the results of the other Romanian swimmers: Alin Coste finished second in heat 2 with 23.50s; Daniel Macovei finished 9th in heat 4 with 23.60s; while Marius Radu finished 9th in heat 6 with 22.95s.
For his achievement at the 2016 European Aquatics Championships, Radio Romania International has designated Norbert Trandafir the Athlete of the Week.
Trandafir is 28 years old. He was born on February 8, 1988 in Targu Mures into a mixed Romanian-Hungarian family. In 2011, he won the silver medal in the 100m freestyle event at the Shenzhen Summer Universiade. The following year, he won the bronze in the same event at the European Aquatics Championships in Debrecen, Hungary. He also took part in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing but did not qualify for the later stages.
Trandafir also holds three national records: in the 50m freestyle event, where he clocked 21.98s in Barcelona in 2013, in the 100m freestyle event, with a clocking of 48.75s in Rome in 2009 and in the 50m butterfly event, with a clocking of 24.26s in Bucharest in 2015.
