football flash Romania’s national football team’s contenders in the preliminary group F of the Euro 2016 are Greece, Hungary, Finland, Northern Ireland and the Faeroe Islands, according to last Sunday’s qualifying draw in the French city of Nice.

The top-of-the table and the runner-up teams in each group will secure their ticket for the final tournament. In November 2015, third-placed squads in each group will be playing their games in the playoffs, competing for the final tournament’s last four positions. For the drawing of lots, Romania was part of the third group for the Euro 2016, scheduled to be held in France. Included in the first-tier qualifying group was the national team of Greece, which sank Romania in the 2014 World Cup playoffs. Head-to-heads for Romania and Hungary points to the fact that Hungary was also Romania’s opponent in the 2014 edition of the World Cup preliminaries. Back then the Romanians managed a 2-all draw away from home, and had no problem winning the return game in Bucharest, 3-nil.

 

Romania’s debut confrontation counting towards the Euro 2016 preliminaries will be the away game against Greece on September 7, 2014, according to the European Football Union’s competition timetable, which for the first time ever is computer-based. Romania’s first home match is scheduled on October 11, 2014 against Hungary, while Romania’s closing game in the group stage wile be the one against Faeroe Islands on October 11, 2015, away from home.

 

The national team manager Victor Piturca stated the Romanians were part of a manageable group. “We didn’t end up in a difficult group. Ours is an accessible one. As a rule, three teams will be fighting to make headway into the competition, maybe the fourth one. Greece rank as favorites. What’s good for us is that we know Greece, we’re quite familiar with Hungary. Finland is a dangerous team:” Piturca pointed out.

 

In another move, the new President of the Professional Football League Gino Iorgulescu warned that Romania need not indulge itself into believing that they had an easy group for the Euro 2016 preliminaries, also reiterating he wanted the national team manager, Victor Piturca to be removed from his position. “ We should just wait for the federation elections, we shall see who the new president is, what his mindset is. My standpoint is bolstered, but I’m not the one to take the final decision.” The Professional Football League’s president also said.

 

On Wednesday, March 5th, Romania will be playing a friendly game against Argentina; a confrontation that will be hosted by the National Arena in Bucharest. Argentina’s lineup will be arriving in Bucharest on March the 1st. and their first training session is scheduled on Monday, March the 3rd,. For the game against Romania, Manager Alejandro Sabella summoned 22 footballers, among whom such stars as Lionel Messi, Angel Di Maria, Gonzalo Higuain, Sergio Aguero and Ezequiel Lavezzi.

 

The defender Stefan Radu scored twice for his Italian side Lazio Rome, in a confrontation on Sunday night, counting towards Serie A’s 25th leg. Lazio managed a 3-2 home win against Sassuolo. Radu drew first blood for Lazio on 36 minutes, also scoring the second and also Lazio’s winning goal in the 82nd minute.

 

Striker Bogdan Stancu scored twice for Genclerbirligi Ankara, a team that was held to an unassuming 2-all draw by Konyaspor this past Sunday on home turf, in a match counting towards the 22nd leg of the Turkish football championship.
