The Romanian women’s handball team defeated the world vice-champions the Netherlands, the host of a friendly tournament taking place in Eindhoven, score 24-23, on the last day of the competition. The Romanian side is now coached by Ambros Martin of Spain, after last year with Swedish manager Tomas Ryde at their helm they grabbed bronze at the World Cup. Scoring the winning goal for Romania was Eliza Buceschi, who converted a 7-meter penalty throw on the last second of the game, despite the host team’s protests.

 

Scoring for Romania were Eliza Buceschi – 6 goals, Aneta Udristioiu – 4 goals, Gabriela Perianu – 4 goals, Laura Popa – 3 goals, Florina Chintoan – 2 goals, Cristina Laslo – 2 goals, Oana Manea – 1 goal, Laura Chiper – 1 goal and Marinela Neagu – 1 goal. In Eindhoven, Romania reported a single loss – 19-23 against Serbia, and two wins , 32-25 with the Netherlands “B” Team and 24-23 with the Netherlands “A” team. We recall Romania will take part in the European Championship to be hosted by Sweden over December 4-18. Romania has been drawn in Group D alongside Norway, Russia and Croatia.

 

From men’s handball, the Romanian champions Dinamo Bucharest continue their good run in Champions League. In the last match of Group D, on home turf, Dinamo Bucharest was close to clinching a win against Besiktas Istanbul of Turkey, who made it 26-all on the last second of playtime. This was the second time Dinamo lost a win shortly before time. In the match against Holstebro of Denmark, the local side evened the odds with a 7-meter throw, final score 32-all. The French team HBC Nantes tops the group tables with 5 points, followed by Dinamo Bucharest with 4 points, Motor Zaporoje of Ukraine with 3 points, Besiktas Istanbul of Turkey with 3 points, ABC Braga of Portugal with 2 points and TTH Holstebro with 1 point. Dinamo will next play ABC Braga of Portugal away from home on October 15.

 

CSM Bucharest and Politehnica Timisoara again put up a good performance in the EHF Cup. CSM grabbed a 29-23 home win against Croatia’s Zamet, while Poli Timisoara won away from home 24-23 against Arendal of Norway. Both matches counted towards the first leg of the second preliminary round in the EHF Cup and are favorite to advance to the third round.
