Romanian women’s handball team CSM Bucharest has again succeeded to go through to the quarterfinals of the Champions League. Following the last fixtures they played in the main stage, which drew to a close on Sunday, CSM came 3rd in the second group, after Gyor and Larvik, but ahead of Danish contenders Mitylland. In their group, CSM outperformed Slovenia’s Krim Ljubljana and Danish champions Team Esbjerg.

From the competition’s group one, the teams that made headway into the quarterfinals were, in descending order, Vardar Skopje, Ferencváros Budapest, Buducnost Podgorica and Metz. Germany’s Thüringer and HC Astrakhanochka of Russia failed to move up into the Champions League quarter-finals.

For CSM Bucharest, the 3rd place in the League’s current season is definitely a better result than in 2016, when it ended 4th in the Champions League’s main group stage, the last place in the group to secure them a ticket for the quarterfinals. But this did not prevent CSM to walk away with the trophy in 2016.

In the 2017 edition of the Champions League, CSM are pitted against Hungarian contenders Ferencváros. Both legs are scheduled in April.

Meanwhile, the national women’s handball team’s training stage in underway at the Izvorani Olympic Centre near Bucharest. The manager of the national team, Ambros Martín from Spain, is testing several handballers from the youth teams, for the main line-up. However, some of the key full-timers were left out, such as Cristina Neagu, Eliza Buceschi or Melinda Geiger, who were very likely allowed to rest after an exhausting inter-clubs competition season. Oana Manea and keeper Paula Rǎdulescu were left home as well, after they announced their retirement from the national team. This coming weekend in Bucharest, the national team will play two friendly games against a very strong Spanish team.
