Romanian football team Viitorul Constanta is the new League One champion. With club owner Gheorghe Hagi at the helm, Viitorul finished the League One play-off on a par, in terms of points, with FCSB, formerly known as Steaua Bucharest. However, Viitorul earned their top-of-the-table position because of their better record sheet as regards direct results in the play-off series. However, FCSB had a different take on current regulations and made public the fact that they would notify the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, as they believe the title is rightfully theirs.

 

In the first play-off stage this past Saturday Viitorul grabbed a 1-nil home win against CFR Cluj, in the south-eastern Romanian town of Ovidiu. On the National Arena in Bucharest, FCSB defeated CSU Craiova, 3-nil, while Dinamo were held to a 1-all draw by Astra Giurgiu, on home turf.

 

In the play-out on Friday, western Romanian team Gaz Metan Medias trounced FC Voluntari 4-1, while on Sunday, in the western Romanian region of Banat, the local side Poli Timisoara ended the fixture against Poli Iasi 1-all.

 

Now it’s news from tennis, as for the second year running, Romanian tennis player Simona Halep won the Madrid tournament, a major competition with an overall 5,439,350 dollars up for grabs. In the final this past Saturday, Halep snatched a 7-5, 6-7, 6-2 win against her French challenger Kristina Mladenovic. For her notable feat in Madrid, Halep will receive 1,043,680 euros and 1,000 WTA points. Attending the game were Romanian gymnastics legend Nadia Comaneci and the owner of the tournament, former Romanian tennis player Ion Tiriac.

 

Romanian gymnast Larisa Iordache on Sunday won the beam final of the World Cup contest hosted by the town of Koper in Slovenia. On Saturday, Iordache won gold in the uneven parallel bars event.

 

On Sunday in Bucharest, the women foil fencer team of the Army’s Steaua Sports Club won the final they played against Ukrainian challengers SVSM Kyiv 38-37. Romania’s foil fencing champion team, made up of Mălina Călugăreanu, Maria Boldor, Rebeca Cândescu and Anca Săveanu won the first European competition in 11 years.
