New Year’s Eve in Romania

new year’s eve in romania The countdown has started and people are making the last preparations for the New Year party

Once this Christmas has passed, the next natural question is where we should spend the New Year’s night. Just like every year, hotels and guesthouses have presented a variety of tempting offers, but all Romania’s big cities host parties in their central squares. It’s become a tradition to celebrate the New Year in the street.

Raluca Ganea, coordinator of cultural projects with the Bucharest Town Hall’s Centre for Cultural Projects (ARCUB) says that the programme offered to Bucharesters and tourists is varied: “We are using the same structure that we have used in the past ten years since we’ve been organizing this event in the street. This year, the New Year party will be held in the George Enescu Square, in downtown Bucharest. From 7 pm to 1 am, a concert featuring the best-known Romanian pop, rock and dance singers will be held. It’s good to spend this special night in the street, as there is a very good energy when people get together to celebrate and sharing it with your fellow Bucharesters is a positive thing. There will be fireworks starting at midnight, to last between 12 and 14 minutes and we hope the show will be as impressive as ever.”

Can Bucharest compete with other European capitals in terms of New Year parties? “The city of Bucharest can be proud of the event it organizes every year. The party that ARCUB proposes is as spectacular as any other such party held in the big cities that celebrate in the street. What is important, in our opinion, is the energy created during the event. The artists invited to perform are famous internationally, and spectators will surely recognize them.”

Preparations are almost over in western Romania as well. In 2021 the city of Timisoara will be European Cultural Capital.

The city mayor, Ioan Robu, believes that picking Timisoara to spend the New Year night is a very good idea: “Timisoara city hall invites the locals as well as those who are visiting the city during the winter holidays to attend an original show on the 31st of December starting 8 o’clock in the evening aimed at marking the entrance into the new year. This event will bring together artists who have a special relation with Timisoara, like Alexandra Mitroi, Feli and the rock band Cargo. This year we’ll be trying to spice up the local artistic life by inviting German artist Lou Bega, who shot to fame with a hit called Mambo no. 5. The artists invited may also cover a wide range of styles like pop, rock, dance, blues etc in order to cater for all tastes. We’ll welcome the new year through a beautiful fireworks show and we also have in store a couple of surprises, which we hope to be appreciated by those who chose to spend the New Year’s Eve party in Timisoara. The Victory Square is our place of choice where we hope to again have a good time on New Year’s Eve.”

Those who want to spend the winter holidays in Timisoara will have a lot of visiting sites to choose from. Here is city mayor Nicolae Robu again: Timisoara’s old city center is worth visiting as it has been turned into a genuine promenade area. A long pedestrian route from the bastion to the Cathedral offers a lot of tourist objectives of a great cultural variety including the Metropolitan Orthodox Cathedral, the Catholic Dome and the synagogue. Timisoara isn’t far from the mountains and people can easily travel 100-120 km to spend some great time in the resorts of the Small Mountain or Semenic. So, don’t forget, we are waiting for you in Timisoara for New Year’s Eve. Happy holidays and Happy New Year to all Romanians wherever they are!”

The Romanians who want to pass into 2018 in the middle of nature, far from the hustle and bustle of a city can choose from the large offer of guest houses in the rural area or may opt for a spa resort.

Alina Nicola, representative of a tourist compound close to the National Park in Cozia, southern Romania has more: We’d like to inform listeners on the menu for the New Year’s dinner, which is rich and diverse. We have cold appetizers: tomatoes with mozarella, cheese bullets with peperoni, game meat salami, raw-dried pork shoulder as well as various types of meat rolls. Then comes the first course, which is baked shirloin stuffed with bacon and potatoes; this course goes well with home-made pickles. Our compound is Romanian-themed and is located in the Calimanesti resort, the Olt Valley, on the main road linking Ramnicu Valcea to Sibiu. Besides the delicious Romanian cuisine we also offer our visitors saunas and indoor and outdoor swimming pools, all of these in a breathtaking landscape.”
