sports roundup A round-up of the weekend's main sporting events

This past weekend has proved extremely auspicious for Romanian women’s handball! All three Romanian teams playing in the European competitions have won their scheduled fixtures.

On Friday evening and home turf, CSM Bucharest outclassed Hungarian contenders Gyor, in a fixture counting towards the first leg of the Champions League’s main group stage. Ahead of the match, CSM and Gyor, champion teams in their countries, each had six points on their record sheet, in the wake of the results in the League’s previous stage.

In Bucharest, Gyor had a good start. They had a 2-nil and a 3-1 lead, yet CSM came from behind and had the lead themselves. The Hungarians balanced the game, managed to again be in the lead, but the final part of the first half belonged to the Romanian side, who early into the second half had a 13 -11 advantage. For the rest of the match, CSM Bucharest had no problem overpowering Gyor, and secured a 28:22 win. Norwegian player Amanda Kurtovic was CSM’s top scorer, with 8 goals on her record sheet.

In main group one, CSM have the lead, with 8 points. Following in descending order are Gyor and Rostov Don, each with 6 points on their record sheet. CSM’s next fixture will be away from home, as on February the 4th the Romanians take on Danish contenders Midtjylland.

On Saturday, Handbal Club Zalău succeeded in getting the third win in a row in the EHF Cup. Gheorghe Tadici’ s trainees on home turf defeated Czech opponents Banik Most, 31-28, in a fixture counting towards the competition’s D Group. Roxana Rob scored the greatest number of goals for Zalau, nine. At the top of the table in D Group are Norwegian team Larvik, with 7 points, followed by Zalau, with 6.

The other Romanian team in the EHF Cup, SCM Craiova, has climbed to the 2nd position in EHF Cup’s A Group. Also on Saturday, SCM secured a 30:24 home win against Russian contenders Kuban Krasnodar. SCM thus had their revenge for last week’s 26:28 defeat in Russia. Cristina Florianu was SCM Craiova’s top scorer, with 10 goals on her record sheet. On February the 3rd, CSM take on A Group leader, Brest Bretagne, also on home turf.
