Unionist initiatives in the Republic of Moldova

unionist initiatives in the republic of moldova The number of localities in the Republic of Moldova that are calling for the union with neighboring Romania has exceeded 100

After 27 years of independence from Moscow, democracy in the Republic of Moldova is on the brink of failure, poverty is ever growing and only the prospect of the union with Romania seems to give hopes for development to this ex-Soviet state, with a majority Romanian-speaking population. This is the declaration of one of the more than 100 locally elected officials in the Republic of Moldova made on behalf of the communities he represents, including the community that gave the pro-Russian president Igor Dodon. These local officials have signed a Declaration for Union with Romania. Upon the invitation of the Romanian authorities, they met at the weekend, at the Culture Palace in Iasi (eastern Romania), where they set up the League of Locally Elected Unionists. The Romanian Foreign Minister Teodor Meleşcanu says that the declarations regarding the union of the Republic of Moldova with Romania are the expression of friendship, but they have no legal value:

I am convinced that we need to join efforts to help Moldova get closer to the EU. In the context in which the Republic of Moldova will also become a EU member like Romania, there will be free movement of people, capital and goods between the two countries. Therefore, I don’t think that we should be considering the classical schemes of changing the borders, among other things, either through military operations or any type of warfare.”

The Romanian Foreign Minister made this statement in the context in which, on Wednesday, the leaders of the Prahova County Council (in southern Romania) together with the local councilors also signed a document in which they call on the Romanian and Moldovan parliaments to adopt a joint declaration on the reunification of Romania and of the Romanian people and to pass a legislative package in the sense.
