sports roundup A look at the main sporting events this past weekend

The best Romanian performance so far at the World's Fencing Championships, a competition underway in the Chinese city of Wuxi, has been a silver medal won by Ana Maria Popescu in the individual epee event. In order to make it to the finals the Romanian had to successively defeat Kanna Oishi of Japan, the Italian Rossella Fiamingo and the Ukrainians Joan Feybi Bejura and Olena Krivitska. In the semifinals, Popescu outperformed Courtney Hurley of the USA, but conceded defeat to Maria Navarria of Italy in the finals. Ana Maria, who in 2016 was an Olympic champion with the Romanian team, has thus clinched her best individual performance in a World Championship tournament.

The BRD Bucharest Open, a WTA tournament with more than 226 thousand dollars in prize money, ended in the Romanian capital on Sunday. The world's 22nd player, Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia, secured a two-set win 7-6, 6-2 in the final against WTA 60th Petra Martic of Croatia, while a Romanian pair made up of Irina Begu and Andreea Mitu won the doubles contest also in two sets 6-3, 6-4 against Danka Kovinic of Montenegro and Maryna Zanevska of Belgium.
