Government survives no-confidence vote

A new attempt at removing the left-of-centre government in Bucharest has, rather predictably, failed. Initiated by the Opposition, the motion of no-confidence against the Government formed by the Social Democratic Party and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats and headed by Viorica Dancila was dismissed on Thursday in Parliament.

From the very beginning, the initiators, namely the National Liberal Party, the Save Romania Union, the People's Movement Party and a handful of non-affiliated MPs, were aware that theirs was an impossible mission, given that the Social Democrats have secured a comfortable majority in Parliament. Furthermore, the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania, a small party that held the swing vote, attended the meeting, but abstained from voting, as they have done in other occasions as well. So the motion only got 161 votes, out of the 233 it needed in order to dismiss the Cabinet.

In the text, the Opposition urged MPs to choose between the Social Democratic leader Liviu Dragnea, and Romania, and argued that the Government must go. They accused Power of introducing changes in the justice laws which affect the image of the country, and also emphasized what they see as the incompetence, disinterest and bad faith of the authorities with regard to the situation in public education and healthcare, as well as the negative effects that the frequent Cabinet reshuffling have on citizens. The Opposition did not overlook the economic situation, the pensions and salaries which, they say, will not be paid as promised before the elections. Here is Claudiu Nasui, of the Save Romania Union:

Claudiu Nasui: "Successive cabinet reshuffling only show that for every minister who was proved to be incompetent, the Social Democrats and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats have at least 3 or 4 backups who are more incapable still. Romania's problem is not that it lacks money, but that it lacks the competence required in order to spend the money that the EU gives us for free. You have used government reshuffling to mislead people into thinking things will change for the better, but in fact the redistribution of Cabinet seats was only the outcome of squabbling and mafia-style account settling between the criminal groups within the ruling party."

The PM rejected the Opposition's attacks, claiming their arguments are self-contradicting and the text of the motion is trivial. The Government will continue to meet the goals in its governing programme, Viorica Dancila vowed:

Viorica Dancila: "I have replaced those ministers who were lagging behind. What would you have had me do, keep them in place? The purpose of a government is not to keep the seats warm for its ministers, but to do what it promised in the election campaign, and I'm telling you, with all responsibility, that I will replace as many ministers as it takes in order for us to implement the governing platform."

Viorica Dancila also announced that she will not step down, no matter how many times her resignation is requested.
