The pair made of Sorana CĂ®rstea and Andreea Mitu won the women's doubles event of the tennis tournament in Lugano, Switzerland, with 250,000 USD in prize money. This past Sunday, the Romanians grabbed a 1-6, 6-2,10-8 win against the 1st-seed pair made of Russia's Veronika Kudermetova and Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan.  For both Cirstea and Mitu, it was the first final they won in 2019 and the first title they won together. Cirstea's record includes four WTA doubles titles and five finals played, while Mitu's record includes three WTA titles and one final played.


Romania's record at the European Weightlifting Championships hosted by the Georgian city of Batumi last week is way above par, as the Romanian delegation walked away with 14 medals, of which six were gold. There of the gold medals went to Elena Andries in the 49-kilogram category, while the other three were won by Loredana Toma, in the 64-kilogram category. The 14-strong Romanian delegation also took advantage of the opportunity to amass the number of points required for the participation in the 2020 edition of the Olympic Games in Japan.


The European Wrestling Championships ended in Bucharest this past Sunday. More than 600 wrestlers from 40 countries took part in the event. Consisting of 29 wrestlers, the Romanian delegation walked away with four medals. In the women's version of the competition, Kriszta Incze won silver in the 65-kilogram category, and Andreea Beatrice Ana walked home with bronze, in the 55-kilogram category. In the men's version of the competition, the Greek-Roman style, Florin Tita won silver in the 55-kilogram category, while Alin Alexuc Ciurariu won bronze, in the 130-kilogram category.


Last week, the Polish city of Sczeczin hosted the  European Gymnastics Championships. The Romanian delegation walked home with no medal on their record sheet. In the women's version of the championships, the best results were obtained by Denisa Golgota, who came in 4th in the floor event, 5th in the beam and 6th in the vault event. Golgota was 17th-palced in the all-round event.


It's news from women's handball now. CSM Bucharest wasted the opportunity to become part of  the Champions League's elite teams, as this past Saturday they sustained a 23-22 away defeat by the French team Metz Handball, in the second leg of the quarterfinals. We recall that CSM had also lost the first leg played at home, 26-31.


We go out with news from domestic football. After the first half of Group 1 as part of League One's domestic championship, CFR Cluj are top of the table, with three points more than second-placed FCSB. This past Sunday, on home turf, CFR took on FCSB, and the match ended in a goalless draw. Also in Group 1, in the fifth round, Viitorul Constanta grabbed a 2-1 home win against Universitatea Craiova, this past Saturday. In Grouo1 on Friday, Concordia Chiajna secured a 3-nil home win against Dunarea Calarasi, while away from home, Dinamo Bucharest won the game against Politehnica Iasi, 1-nil. On Saturday, FC Botosani won the home game against FC Hermannstadt also 1-nil. On Sunday, Gaz Metan Medias won the away game they played against FC Voluntari, 2-1.
