Karlsruhe, the German city located in the land of Baden-Württemberg last week played host to a WTA women's tennis tournament, an event with 125, 000 USD in prize money. 6th-seeded Irina Begu was among the favorites to winning the tournament. Begu went past the first round, but sadly she sustained an injury and pulled out of the competition. The main draw in Karlsruhe included four other Romanians, Laura Paar, Jacqueline Cristian, Elena Ruse and Patricia Ţig, who provided the surprise of the tournament because she won it. In the first round, Tig defeated Czech contender Barbora Krejcikova, 6-3, 6-4. In the second round, Tig grabbed a 7-5, 7-5 win against Elenei Ruse. In the quarterfinals, Patricia secured a 7-5, 6-nil win against Georgian challenger Ekaterine Gorgodze. In the semifinals, Patricia Tig had no problem securing a 6-2, 6-nil win against Italy's Jasmine Paolioni. I the final, Patricia Ţig secured three-set win against the tournament's 2nd-seeded player, WTA number 66, Belgian challenger Alison Van Uytvank, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Patricia Tig's noteworthy feat in Karlsruhe earned brought her 20,000 USD and 140 WTA points. Reason enough for Radio Romania International to designate Patricia the Athlete of the week.


Patricia Ţig was born on July 27, 1994, in Caransebeş, south-western Romania. Tig played her first ITF tournament in Craiova, in 2009. In 2012, Patricia won her first ITF tournament. In 2015, Patricia Tig played her first WTA tournament final in Baku. In Azeri capital city, in the semifinals, Patricia secured a tree-set win against the tournament's top-seeded challenger, Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. In the final, Patricia sustained a three-set defeat against Margarita Gasparyan. Patricia Tig''s career best occurred in 2017, when the Romanian was 83rd-placed according to WTA rankings.


Patricia Tig was on maternity leave, since she was the proud mother of a baby girl. The Romanian had her comeback in competition in 2019, for the second time around Patricia played the final of the WTA BRD Bucharest Open, where she was defeated by Elena Rybakina of Kazahstan. Winning this past Sunday's final of the Karlsruhe tournament, Patricia skipped 83 positions in the world rankings, climbing up from the 223rd to the 140th place.
