Marian Dragulescu is now the 50th athlete to secure qualification to the Olympic Games of 2020. At the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart, Dragulescu, who will turn 39 on December 18, managed to qualify to the vault final. Marian Dragulescu will thus take part for the fifth time in the Olympic Games. He is the holder of three Olympic medals, all won in Athens in 2004, namely silver in the floor final, bronze in the team event and bronze in the vault final. Maria Holbura will also represent Romania in gymnastics after securing qualification in the women's all-round event.


Romania has secured its presence in the Olympic Games in other competitions as well. In rowing a total of 18 athletes will compete in the men's quad-scull event, the women's double-scull lightweight race, the women's quad-scull race, the men's coxless pair, the women's coxless pair and the men's double-scull races. Romania's coxed eight crew will try to qualify at the rowing championships hosted by Lucerne next year. In kayak-canoe, the Romanian men's double-canoe crew will compete in the 1,000-m race.


Romania's under-21 team has qualified to the Tokyo Olympics after reaching the semi-finals of the European Championship hosted this year by Italy and San Marino. This is Romania's first participation in the Olympics in football after a 56-year break, which coincidently was also in Tokyo in 1964.


Five athletes have also secured qualification in the athletics competition: Florentina Iusco  and Alina Rotaru will compete in the long jump event, Claudia Bobocea will run in the 1,500-m race, Daniela Stanciu has qualified to the high jump event while Alin Firfirica will compete in discus throw.


In cycling, only Vlad Dascalu has qualified to the Olympics in the mountain bike event.


In swimming, Romania will be represented by Robert Glinta and Daniel Martin, both in the 100-m backstroke event.

In wrestling, Alina Vuc has secured qualification after winning silver in the 50-kg category at the World Championship hosted last month by Kazakhstan.

In shooting, Laura Coman is the defending European Champion and favorite to win the 10-m air rifle event at the Tokyo Olympics.
