Romanian weightlifter Loredana Toma grabbed three gold medals in the 64-kg category on Wednesday at the World Weightlifting Championships held in Rome, a competition that counts towards the Olympic Games in Tokyo this year. Toma won the snatch event with 113 kg, being followed by Maude Charron of Canada with 105kg and Italy's Giorgia Bordignon with 102kg. In the clean and jerk event, Toma ranked 1st with 136 kg, followed by Charron with 130kg and Marina Rodriguez Mitjan of Cuba with 124kg.


The Romanian basketball club U-BT Cluj-Napoca grabbed a dramatic home win over Tsmoki Minsk of Belarus, final score 76-74. The match counted towards the FIBA EuroCup Group J. The final score was set by American Patrick Richard, who scored the final two points three seconds from full time, after intercepting the ball. Tsmoki Minsk is top of the group tables with 8 points, followed by U-BT Cluj-Napoca, also with 8 points. Ironi Ness Ziona ranks third, while CSM CSU Oradea is in 4th place, both with 7 points. The top two teams will advance to the quarterfinals. February 5th will see the last group fixture, when Tsmoki-Minsk will play CSM CSU Oradea while U-BT Cluj-Napoca will take on Ironi Ness Ziona.


Romanian tennis player Simona Halep on Thursday failed to qualify to the Australian Open final after losing to Garbine Muguruza of Spain in the semis, 7-6, 7-5. Halep will be awarded a 1-million-dollar check and 780 WTA points for acceding to the semi-finals.


The new coach of the Romanian rugby national team, Andy Robinson of England, will officially make his debut on the bench of "the Oaks" on Saturday in the match against Georgia venued in Tbilisi. The match counts towards the first round of the 2020 edition of Rugby Europe Championship.
