THE WEEK IN SPORTS

the week in sports Review of last week's sporting events

We now know the name of two of the three football teams that advanced this season to the Romanian Premiere League. We are talking about UTA Arad and FC Arges, two long-standing teams, several times Romanian champions. As third placed in the second league play-offs, CS Mioveni will face off against the team coming in behind the next to last in the Premiere League.
Arges advanced in the last stage of the play-offs, after Rapid Bucharest tied against Turris-Oltul Turnu Magurele in the last seconds of the game. Turris had scored in the 60th minute with a free kick. Rapid, with small chances of advancement, tied by scoring a free kick as well. Another 1-all game was that between FC Arges, playing at home, and UTA. In the third game of this stage, Petrolul Ploiesti, with no chance of advancing, unexpectedly overcame CS Mioveni away from home, 2-1. UTA makes a comeback to the Premiere League after 12 years, after falling back in the 2007-2008 season. FC Arges returns after an 11 year gap. CS Mioveni was kicked back to the second league in 2011-2012. At the same time, the respective positions of the two teams, which had an equal amount of points, was made by Mioveni taking advantage of their points rounding up upon entering the play-offs.

In the Premiere League, in Saturday's play-offs, in the tenth stage, FC Botosani defeated Gaz Metan Medias 4-1. The FCSB- Astra Giurgiu game was postponed due to the coronavirus being found among the latter team's members. On Monday, the decisive game for the current championship is being played between Universitatea Craiova and CFR Cluj.

In the play-out of the first league, games were played counting towards the next to last stage, number 13. On Saturday, FC Hermannstadt defeated Academica 2-0, and Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe defeated Viitorul Constanta 3-0. On Sunday, Poli Iasi defeated at home Chindia Targoviste 1-0, and Dinamo Bucharest won away from home against FC Voluntari 2-1. Chindia got relegated based on its points. In next to last place is Dinamo, five points behind Politehnica Iasi, a team that has five games less.
