rri sports club - football The draw for the Europa League preliminary phase has picked tough opponents for Romanian clubs

Romanian football clubs qualified to the 2020-2021 season of Europa League have a difficult task ahead. Tuesday's draw hosted by Nyon has pitted them against very powerful opponents. FC Botosani, for instance, will play the English team Tottenham in the third preliminary round. First, the team from northern Romania must first defeat Shkendija of North Macedonia in the second round, a match scheduled to take place on September 17 on home turf. Tottenham, currently coached by José Mourinho, ranked 6th in the previous season of Premier League. The English club is playing Lokomotiv Plovdiv of Bulgaria, a team that finished last season in 5th place.

Another Romanian club, CFR Cluj, will take on the winner of the match pitting Djurgården of Sweden against Europa of Gibraltar. Djurgården, the winner of the Swedish championship in 2019, lost 2-nil to Ferencváros of Hungary in Budapest in the first preliminary round of Champions League. If it defeats Europa, the Swedish side will travel to Cluj to play CFR. Djurgården is currently ranked 4th in the Swedish championship after 18 rounds with 30 points, behind Malmö, Häcken and Elfsborg.

FCSB will play Backa Topola of Serbia in the second preliminary round on September 17. The match will be played away from home. In case of a win, FCSB will next play Riteriai of Lithuania or Slovan Liberec of the Czech Republic in the next phase. FCSB has played Liberec in the past, and the Czech team was knocked out by Dinamo Bucharest in the Europa League playoff in the 2009-2010 season. In 2012-2013 CFR Cluj defeated Slovan Liberec in the third preliminary round of Champio League. Finally, in the 2014-2015 edition of Europa League, Astra Giurgiu won both legs of the third preliminary round against Slovan.
