Both Romanian men's handball teams that have proved their mettle in Europa League's second preliminary round this past Tuesday ended their fixtures in a draw. In Constanta, the local side Handbal Club Dobrogea Sud ended the first half of the match against Portuguese opponents Sporting Lisbon two goals down, 14 to 16. Dobrogea Sud had a vigorous comeback early into the second half, scored five goals in a row and secured a 19 to 16 advantage. Towards the end of the game Sporting Lisbon braced up, levelled the score and were a whisker away from emerging as winners, yet Ionut Nistor provided the equalizer in the last minute of regular time, so the match ended 27-all.

In the central Romanian town of Turda, the local side Potaissa held their French opponents, Fenix Toulouse, to an amazing 35-all draw. The first half of the game was sort of balanced, with the guests being one, maybe two goals up form Potaissa, so the first half ended 17-15 in favor of Fenix Toulouse. In the second half, Fenix Toulouse were even five goals up from Potaissa, securing a 25-20 lead. The team from Turda came from behind and the confrontation regained its balance once again. The return legs as part of the Europa League's second preliminary round are scheduled on Tuesday, September 29.

This coming weekend will see matches being played, counting towards the Champions League in women's handball. In Group B on Saturday, SCM Ramnicu Valcea travel to Moscow for a game against TSKA. So far, SCM Ramnicu Valcea have sustained defeats in both legs they played in the competition's group stage. This coming Sunday in Bucharest, CSM face Rostov Don, also from Russia. In their group, CSM Bucharest are the only ones to have won both games they have played so far, defeating Metz on home court and also outperforming Danish side Esbjerg, away from home. Romanian handball legend Cristina Neagu scored 12 goals in the former game and 10 in the latter.

The secretary general of Romanian Handball Federation, former handball player Cristina Varzaru, is, as of this week, the president of the Athletes' Commission with the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee. Varzaru has thus gained a full-fledged membership in the Executive Committee of the Romanian and Sports Committee. In Izvorani, nearby Bucharest, the Olympic Committee will hold the election General Assembly this coming Thursday.
