Roland Garos, the last Grand Slam tennis tournament of the year, is well under way in Paris, but no Romanian player has made it to the second week. The first seed Simona Halep was eliminated in the quarterfinals, as was the all-Romanian pair Andreea Mitu and Patricia Ţig in the women's doubles and the Romanian-Dutch pair Horia Tecău and Jean-Julien Rojer in the men's doubles.


Of all the Romanian players in competition at the French Open, Irina Bara had the most outstanding achievemt, given that this was the first time she was in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament. She made it through the qualifiers to reach the third round, where she lost to the fourth seed and world no. 6 Sofia Kenin of the US. To reach the third round, Bara defeated the world no. 65, Belgium's Alison Van Uytvanck and the world no. 30, Croatia's Donna Vekic.


So, for her achievement at Roland Garros, Radio Romania International has chosen Irina Bara the Athlete of the Week.


Irina Bara was born on 18th March 1995 in the small town of Ştei, in the west of Romania. She played a lot of on the ITF circuit, winning 9 singles and 28 doubles titles. She made her debut on the main draw of a WTA tournament in 2015 in the women's doubles at the Bucharest Open, together with Mihaela Buzărnescu. Since then she has made constant progress, going up in the doubles' world rankings to reach the 56th position in May 2019. She is now 105. She was 142nd in the singles ranking ahead of Roland Garros. Thanks to the 170 points she won in Paris, she will improve her ranking significantly.
