This Thursday, the Romanian delegation won two gold medals and one bronze. Gold medal winners were athlete Roxana Birca, in the 5, 000 meter race and free-wrestler Stefan Gheorghita, in the 84 kilogram category. Another Romanian athlete Carmen Toma walked away with bronze in the hop, step and jump event. Romania has so far won a total of six medals.


Romanian football Thursday night registered the first European victory of the season on Bucharest’s National Arena: Astra Giurgiu qualified for the Europa League’s second preliminary round after having defeated Slovenian side NK Domzale, 2-nil. The match counted towards the return leg of the competition’s first preliminary round. In the first leg they played away from home last week, Astra Giurgiu snatched a 1-nil win.


The domestic football championship kick-starts at the weekend, yet not with the regular first leg confrontations, but with a playoff match counting for a place in the championship’s League One. The Romanian Football Federation officially decided that Rapid Bucharest should take on Concordia Chiajna. Bucharest’s Dinamo stadium will be playing host to the game on Saturday.


Initially, both teams ought to have been relegated. Rapid’s huge pending debts prevented the club from meeting the demands of being granted the license to play in League One, while Concordia Chiajna last season came on the first tier’s 15th place, which earned the team a relegation position. But clubs and TV stations providing live transmission of the domestic championship’s League One matches put a lot of pressure on the Federation, which took the decision that 18 teams will be playing in League One, so a vacant position had to be filled…
