The Common Agricultural Policy must remain balanced and benefit from an adequate budget, believes the Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.

The Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan met on Wednesday with Christophe Hansen, the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, whose visit to Bucharest took place in the context of the negotiations on the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the Multiannual Financial Framework 2028-2034. The PM admitted that Romania has significant deficits in sectors such as pork production and processing capacity, which makes the country export raw materials and import finished products. Bolojan stressed the need to consolidate the production and processing of agricultural products. He highlighted the importance of investments that support the diversification of production, the development of modern agricultural infrastructure and the association of local producers, in order to boost competitiveness on the market.

In turn, the European Commissioner Christophe Hansen presented the measures proposed to protect European farmers and support the development of rural areas, to make them more attractive to new generations. ‘The emphasis is on supporting small and family farms, stimulating young farmers, as well as supporting large holdings, including through investments in modern technologies, such as irrigation systems,’ the government said after the discussions between the two. The Prime Minister believes it is essential that the future Common Agricultural Policy remains balanced and benefits from an adequate budget, given that some member states propose reducing European funds. The rules for accessing funding must be realistic and adapted to the level of development of each state, in order to ensure the protection of farmers and effective access to available resources, PM Bolojan says. Also, Romania believes that the cohesion funds and those dedicated to the CAP must remain distinct, as they have complementary roles. The package of proposals for the 2028-2034 Multiannual Financial Framework was published by the European Commission in July, and negotiations are expected to take place over approximately two years.

On Wednesday, Ilie Bolojan also discussed with representatives of large agricultural producers and processors about how the Government can support them to increase production capacities and promote Romanian products on national and foreign markets. The PM also had discussions on these topics with the representatives of the Association of Large Commercial Networks in Romania. They offered their availability to contribute to the promotion of Romanian producers on foreign markets. Company representatives explained the difficulties they face in carrying out investment projects and showed their willingness to continue consultations to identify government solutions that would support the increase in production capacity and to promote Romanian products in stores in the country and on foreign markets.
