Although overshadowed by the new Middle East conflict and its global economic fallout, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, now in its 5th year, continues to horrify the world. Two Romanian officials, namely, Senate Speaker Mircea Abrudean and Foreign Minister Oana Ţoiu, travelled to Kyiv on Tuesday, to honor the victims of the massacre committed by invaders in the city of Bucha at the beginning of the conflict, and to once more condemn the Russian Federation’s illegal, unprovoked and unjustified war of aggression against Ukraine. “Alongside Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskky, parliament speakers and heads of parliamentary delegations from Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Republic of Moldova, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, the European Parliament, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, we reiterate our unwavering commitment to the principles of the UN Charter and our full support for the sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, within its internationally recognized borders “, Mircea Abrudean said in a Facebook post.

The Speaker of the Senate, number two in the Romanian state under the Constitution, recalled that, in March 2022, in Bucha, over 500 civilians had been killed, many of them children. “Images and testimonies revealed civilians executed with their hands tied behind their backs and mass graves. Victims exhibited signs of torture or were shot at close range. Evidence of these atrocities came to light in early April 2022, following the Russian troops’ withdrawal from the region. The Bucha massacre documents the Russian forces’ sheer cruelty and lack of humanity during the occupation of the city on the outskirts of Kyiv. And this must not only be condemned, it must never happen again, anywhere in this world”, Abrudean pointed out.

In turn, Foreign Minister Oana Ţoiu reiterated, on behalf of the Romanian Government, her country’s support for Ukraine. She condemned Russia’s ongoing military attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure, which have had devastating effects on civilians and consequences for the neighboring countries. Ţoiu said that no just peace can be built as long as murderers enjoy impunity and presented the steps regarding Romania’s participation in the Special Tribunal aimed at punishing the crime of aggression committed in Ukraine. The Romanian Foreign Minister reaffirmed Bucharest’s commitment to support the EU accession of both Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova. (EE)
