Talks on a future government formula

Against a complicated interior background – as the coming to power of a government with full powers and support from a concrete Parliament majority seems to be mission impossible – Romania’s main political players are carrying on talks on forging a new government.

The newly designated Prime Minister, Siegfried Mureşan, a seasoned Liberal MEP, has provided a few details on the structure, composition and guidelines of the programme his cabinet is going to implement. So, according to Mureșan, the executive he is going to propose, will be including representatives of his own party, the PNL, from the USR and UDMR, while the ruling programme and the list of the ministers proposed is going to be completed by the end of this week, so that parliamentary hearings and plenary vote may be held early next week.

Here is Siegfried Mureșan with more on his main objectives.

Siegfried Muresan: “The state reform, both of the central administration and the local administration is essential. We are going to have a government with only three deputy Prime-Ministers, we are going to reduce the number of MPs merge agencies and institutions with overlapping responsibilities, fewer institutions means less bureaucracy at central level. We are going to finalize the pensions reform and streamline state companies. They were a source of loss until now and I want them to be a source of good services, accessible to people. Over 90% of the state subsidies go into 5,6 companies in the field of transport and in the energy field, which must be streamlined.”

At the opposite pole of the talks there are the PSD, the political party boasting the largest number of MPs in the incumbent Legislature and the AUR, which have announced their intention not to vote for the government Muresan proposes.

PSD leader, Sorin Grindeanu, has mentioned the stand of his party, which has called on Siegfried Muresan to step down.

Sorin Grindeanu: “As things are today, the Social Democratic Party will certainly not vote for this government, and then we are going to shorten the period and have another quick scenario. After this nomination joke, of Siegfried Vasile Muresan, we should come with serious solution and get a government fast.”

On the other hand Romania’s President, Nicusor Dan, has called on the parties involved to show readiness for dialogue and negotiation so that the early-election scenario be avoided.

Nicușor Dan: ”I wish to stay with this process of forging  a government, wish it to be successful and the parties to show readiness for dialogue and negotiation, which hasn’t been visible yet.  I don’t want to have early elections as early elections mean 4,5,6 months of chaos, banners, election debates, polls, legitimate arguments between parties, and I don’t think Romania needs all these.”

According to Parliament arithmetic, Mureșan presently relies on 170 votes from the PNL, USR and UDMR, out of the 233 he needs, which makes the political analysts to see the investiture of his cabinet as a very daring goal.
