The US Open is nearing a close. The competition has reached the semi-finals, with clashes that promise to be spectacular. Since the start of this week, Romania is no longer represented at Flushing Meadows. The last Romanian in the competition was Elena-Gabriela Ruse, in the women’s doubles. Jointly with Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, she had reached the round of 16. In the fight for a place in the quarterfinals, the two athletes were ousted by the Russian-Belgian pair Veronika Kudermetova / Elise Mertens, 6-4, 6-1. For participating in Flushing Meadows, Ruse and Kostyuk were each awarded a 75-thousand dollar check and 240 WTA doubles points.

In other news from tennis, let us note that the pair made up of Romanian Anca Todoni and Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands, has advanced to the semifinals of the WTA 125 tournament in Montreux, Switzerland, offering 115 thousand dollars in total prizes. In the quarterfinals, Todoni and Rus knocked out the pair made up of Dominika Salkova of Czechia and Kathinka von Deichmann of Liechtenstein, 4-6, 6-1, 13-11.

We move on to women’s handball. In the second stage of the National League, Romanian champions CSM Bucharest won 33-28 on Wednesday away from home against CSM Slatina. Coach Adrian Vasile’s trainnes had an easy game, despite a weaker first half, at the end of which they were leading 17-16. The top scorer for CSM was Valeria Maslova of Russia, with 8 goals. The 24-year-old plays as right winger and was brought in this year from the Hungarian team Ferencvaros.

Corona Braşov has won the Romanian Ice Hockey Super Cup. The team from Braşov defeated ACSH Gheorgheni 4-2 on Wednesday. The match opened the freshly built Remetea Ice Arena, one of the most modern ice rinks in Romania, with a capacity of 2,200 seats, hosted by a commune with six thousand inhabitants. Corona thus got revenge, after the team from Gheorgheni had defeated it 4-3 in the previous edition of the Super Cup. (VP)
